To SCR or SNCR?

21 November 2022, Published under Cement News

While in some cases the choice between SCR and SNCR technology for NOx reduction appears straightforward, there is a middle way that enables the use of the less expensive option of SNCR technology. Lechler explains how cement producers can benefit from its high-efficiency SNCR technology.  By Dipl Ing Claus Fritze, Lechler, Germany. South Korean producers sign agreeement to reduce NOx emissions

11 June 2020, Published under Cement News

South Korea’s nine cement producers have agreed to work with the Ministry of Environment to lower NO x emissions, according to The Korea Times. Representatives of companies including Sungshin Cement and Hanil Cement, alongside officials from the ministry and the National Institute of Environmental Research, gathered at Ssangyong Cement's factory in Donghae, Gangwon Province, to sign the partnership. Cement production generates the second-highest amount of NO x emissions in the country, ...

Achieving AF and NOx goals

27 November 2018, Published under Cement News

With reducing fuel costs and sustainability in mind, Brazilian producer Cimento Nacional is persistently striving to implement innovative methods to increase alternative fuels (AF) utilisation while reducing emissions. With the help of an advanced MI-CFD modelling technique the company has successfully achieved this goal at its Sete Lagoas plant, increasing its AF thermal substitution rate and reducing NO x emissions. Injecting new life in NOx control

30 May 2018, Published under Cement News

The aqueous ammonia (NH 3 ) injection system for nitrogen oxide (NO x ) emission reductions at a cement plant in Florida, USA, provided limited ability for flow downturn and material usage efficiency. A new injection system, provided by Lechler, considerably lowered the use of NH 3   in its NO x reduction system. By Stewart McKenzie and Aly Gilbertsen, Lechler Inc, USA, and Daniel Ball, Argos Cement, USA. A new NH 3 injection system with the latest nozzle design by Lechler improved ...

Lebanon: Chekka inaugurates new bag filter

26 June 2017, Published under Cement News

Cimenterie Nationale has inaugurated the new bag filter at its Chekka plant. The new filter will reduce SOx and NOx emissions to 15mg/m3, well below the international norm of 50mg/m3. At the ceremony, which was attended by more than 200 distinguished guests, Cimenterie Nationale’s CEO, Pierre Doumet, said the new filter was testimony to “a permanent modernisation” of the works, a plan started two-and-a-half years ago by the company. However, the US$200m project is still awaiting the r...

Improving SNCR performance

21 December 2016, Published under Cement News

In recent years the reduction of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in kiln lines has been an important topic which is expected to further gain prominence as central European emission limits are set to reduce to 200mg/Nm³ at the start of 2019. NH3 slip emission will also be limited to 30mg/Nm³. To meet these new limits, current SNCR technology will need to be reconsidered as a realistic NOx reduction degree is between 50-75 per cent depending on the kiln line design. USA: Hagerstown plant US$96m upgrade

26 October 2016, Published under Cement News

Holcim (US) has completed a US$96m upgrade on its Hagerstown plant, Maryland. The facility has existed for over 100 years and according John Stull, CEO of US operations for LafargeHolcim, the latest improvements "really should help this plant to serve the community for another 20 to 30 years.” The project, during which the plant remained operational, took two years to complete and complies with federal environmental regulations. Oliver Terver, Hagerstown plant manager, spoke of the company...

Scwhenk invests EUR30m in Allmendingen works

30 September 2016, Published under Cement News

German cement producer Schwenk is investing EUR30m in its Allmendingen cement plant to reduce NOx and organic carbon emissions as well as mercury. The XMercury equipment, designed by Austrian emissions control supplier Scheuch, is expected to come online in February 2017 while the Deconox system, supplied by the same company, will enter service in June.  Meanwhile, the foundations for the Deconox facility will be poured before this winter. The cement plant will also see the constructi...

NOx reduction at Vidal Ramos

05 December 2014, Published under Cement News

To lower NOx emissions Votorantim Cimentos decided to install SNCR equipment as well as implement alternative fuels (AF) use at its Vidal Ramos plant, Brazil. This required the optimisation of the urea injection system to ensure the lowest-possible consumption of the reducing agent before and after the introduction of the AFs. By Mario Henrique Interlenghi & Carlos Roberto Moreira da Cunha, Votorantim Cimentos, Brazil. Votorantim Cimentos’ greenfield Vidal Ramos plant in Brazil has op...
